Motivation Is Fleeting—But It Doesn’t Have to Be
Let’s face it: motivation is hard to hold onto. It comes and goes, often when you least expect it. But here’s the thing: you can create motivation, even when you don’t feel like it.
There are two kinds of motivation:
- External Motivation – the kind that hits you suddenly but fades quickly.
- Internal Motivation – the kind that you generate on your own, which may not feel as intense but is far more reliable.
I prefer generating my own motivation. It’s not as overwhelming as a sudden burst of inspiration, but it’s controllable. Here are three strategies that help me create motivation, even when I’m feeling uninspired.
1. Start Your Day Strong
If you want a productive, energy-filled day, it all begins with how you start your morning. If you lay in bed for even 10 minutes, making excuses, the odds of having a productive day drop significantly.
That’s why I always do something productive first thing in the morning. It could be:
- Drinking a glass of water
- Taking a quick shower
- Doing a skincare routine
- Going for a quick walk
Starting your day with a small, productive action sets the tone for a day filled with energy and momentum. It creates a mindset of action rather than passivity.
2. Remember Why You Started
Achieving a goal is often a mental battle. And tricking your brain is a powerful tool that makes reaching your goals much easier.
One way I do this is by remembering the why behind any goal I’ve set. Why did I start? Why did I stop doing certain things? Why do I want to change?
If it’s about fitness, I remind myself of times when I felt unhealthy, tired, or out of shape. Those memories bring back the uncomfortable reality I never want to experience again. It motivates me to push through challenges to change that version of myself.
3. Surround Yourself with a Support Group
Going at it alone is a major reason why so many people fail to stick to their goals. It’s hard to battle your own mind when it starts creating excuses. You need a support system.
